Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers, describing his government as one “of workers, by the workers, and for the workers.”
Speaking at the 2025 May Day rally in Osogbo, the Governor reiterated that workers’ welfare remains his top governance priority.
Governor Adeleke empathized with workers over the current economic hardships in Nigeria, acknowledging the impact of inflation and high living costs.
“We feel your pains,” he said, assuring workers that his administration would continue to prioritize their needs and collaborate with the Federal Government to lessen the burden on citizens.”
He also revealed that Osun State has successfully reduced its inherited debt by over 40 percent without borrowing, a feat confirmed by the Debt Management Office. The governor attributed this success to prudent financial management and strategic economic reforms, including improved ease of doing business and streamlined processes for obtaining Certificates of Occupancy.
According to Governor Adeleke, his administration’s local content policy has revitalized the state economy, creating job opportunities for local professionals, artisans, and suppliers.
On workers’ welfare, Governor Adeleke stated that his government continues to implement the new minimum wage without fail and has cleared all outstanding salary deductions owed by previous administrations, stressing the importance of continuous capacity-building for public servants to enhance service delivery.
In a remark from the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi represented by State Controller, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Alabi Solomon lauded Nigerian workers as “the wind beneath the nation’s wings” and praised their resilience and patriotism in facing national challenges.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding workers’ contributions.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun State, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, underscored the relevance of the year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”, describing it as a rallying cry for workers to amplify their voices, safeguard their rights, and advocate for a just society.
“Now more than ever, the call to reclaim the civic space resounds,” he said, urging collective action for a better future.
The Chairman, Trade Union Congress Osun State Council, Comrade Bimbo Fasasi noted that economic hardship in Nigeria has manifested in rising unemployment rates, inflation, and shrinking government budgets which has affected vulnerable communities, limiting their ability to participate in civic activities.
He called on government at all levels to formulate policies to ease the economic hardship on Nigerians.
