Thunderstorm: Kwara Govt advises Farmers on Precautionary Measures

Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and and Rural Development has advised farmers to take necessary precautions against winds in their farms.

The call was in response to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, forecast that series of thunderstorms will occur across parts of Kwara State.

The Ministry in a statement issued by its Press Secretary, Ashaolu Omotola, in Ilorin stated that NiMet’s forecast a series of thunderstorms across parts of the state from Tuesday through Thursday, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

It notes that activities in open fields should be limited during periods of lightning and electrical appliances should be disconnected when not in use.

It also cautions farmers to avoid staying around trees and unstable structures during heavy downpours.

The Ministry however reminded farmers that the current rainfall patterns is favourable for the commencement of planting activities.

To ensure a productive season, the Ministry encouraged farmers to adopt climate-smart practices such as timely land preparation, use of improved seed varieties, appropriate spacing and efficient water management.

It stresses that the steps would help reduce risks associated with unpredictable weather and improve yields.

The Ministry promised to support farmers with timely advises and on-field extension services also enjoined stakeholders to stay informed by following the Ministry’s verified platforms.
