The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC is set to commence a special training program aimed at enhancing safety, developing skills, and promoting gender inclusion for female drivers in the country.
The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, who stated this in Abuja at the maiden edition of the program “Women on Wheels”, said the Corps has discovered that more women are now venturing into driving, not only for school runs but also for commercial activities.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed noted that, as of January 2025, Nigeria has over 1.2 million licensed female drivers, hence the need to review the FRSC Road Transport Standardization Scheme to support training and recognition for women in mobility.
Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal, Clement Oladele, the FRSC Corps Marshal, appealed to women groups to educate their members on the importance of attending driving schools before driving on the road.
The President of the National Council for Women Societies, Mrs. Edna Azura, said the Association would embark on grassroots sensitization across the country to emphasize the need for women to receive proper training and be certified before getting behind the wheels.
Mrs.Azura commended the FRSC for the initiative, which she said would help women become more professional in road usage.
Also speaking, the President of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association ROSOWA, Dr. Nafisat Shehu-Mohammed assured that the Association would collaborate with women groups to promote the Women on Wheels initiative towards ensuring effective traffic management in the country.
Earlier, the FRSC Corps Transport Standardization Officer, Kudirat Ibrahim, stated that the Women on Wheels initiative provides a platform to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities in the transport industry.
Senior women in the military and paramilitary organizations, in their separate solidarity messages, pledged to support the FRSC in empowering women to contribute to socio-economic activities in the country.
