The House of Representatives has advocated for the creation of at least one computer-based testing (CBT) center in each of the country’s 774 local government areas to facilitate the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The lawmakers passed the resolution during Thursday’s plenary after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) acknowledged issues in this year’s examination process.
The lawmakers believe that this action would help prevent similar events from happening again in the future.
The House also urged for calm following JAMB’s acknowledgment of errors in the 2025 UTME.
Last month, the Senate considered a similar resolution stating that budgetary provisions for establishing CBT centers across all 774 local government areas in the country will be included in the fiscal year 2026.
Mohammed Dandutse, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, expressed concern about the lack of CBT centers in certain regions while overseeing the 2025 UTME.
He stated that to simplify the process for candidates applying to universities or other tertiary institutions through UTME, ICT centers should be established in all 774 local government councils nationwide.
“I hail from the Katsina South senatorial district, where just two of the 11 local government councils are equipped with ICT centers for UTME.” he lamented
As the examination is computer-based, centers must be established across all 774 local government councils in the country. To achieve this, our committee in collaboration with colleagues from the House of Representatives will ensure budgetary allocations are made for it in the 2026 fiscal year.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Oloyede announced that approximately 379,997 candidates who took the examination would need to retake it due to errors.
The decision followed widespread outrage over what some described as technical glitches, unusually low scores, and alleged irregularities in the questions and answers of this year’s examination.
Upon reviewing the 2025 UTME, JAMB discovered that a technical glitch had impacted 157 out of the total 887 centers.
