Reps Propose Jail Term, 100,000 Fine for Citizens Who Abstain From Voting

The Federal House of Representatives has proposed a bill to jail Nigerians who fail to vote in the upcoming elections for a period of six months or a fine of N100,00 The bill, which passed its second reading on May 15, 2025, seeks to make voting compulsory for all qualified citizens.

The bill was sponsored by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and co-sponsored by Hon. Daniel Ago aim to amend the Electoral Act 2022.

“INEC would be mandated to compile and maintain a voter register with continuous registration exercises.” the bill stated

The bill has triggered intense public debate and remains in its early stages, requiring multiple readings and committee scrutiny before it can become law.
