The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB through the registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, has assured candidates that the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not clash with the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.
Candidates affected by the rescheduling have received SMS notifications and can reprint their new exam slips. While some candidates are pleased with the opportunity to retake the exam, others from the northern region have expressed disappointment, citing technical issues that led to their exclusion.
However, candidates from northern Nigeria are demanding equal opportunity to retake the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), expressing dismay over their exclusion from the resit offer. They argue that the opportunity should be extended nationwide, considering the high failure rate in the exam.
The candidates are urging the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to prioritize fairness and national unity, warning that failure to do so could erode public trust in the examination body. They have also called on northern governors, the National Assembly, and civil society groups to intervene and ensure their voices are heard.
Some candidates in Katsina State are also seeking a reschedule due to technical issues during the exam, including fingerprint rejection by the machines. These candidates are requesting that JAMB accommodate them by rescheduling the exam.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone A, has condemned JAMB’s decision to allow candidates from certain southern states to retake the UTME while excluding those from the North. The students’ body described the move as a “blatant act of discrimination,” expressing dismay that despite reports of mass failure and irregularities in the North, candidates in the region are being denied the same opportunity.
NANS Zone A, which comprises student leaders from seven states in the Northwest, is calling for fairness and equality in the examination process. The group’s Coordinator, Sadi Garba Said, signed a press statement urging JAMB to reconsider its decision and extend the resit opportunity to all candidates nationwide.
