Popular Nollywood Actress, Sandra Okunzuwa has opened up about her surprising journey to the film industry. Sandra never had plans to enter Nollywood. She studied Law and dreamed of becoming a top legal mind in Nigeria.
“On a random day A friend dragged me to a movie audition one day. I wasn’t serious about it. I just said, ‘Let me try for fun.” she said
They gave me a short script to read. I read it like a lawyer—serious, straight, no acting. People laughed! Not because I was funny, but because I was too real.
But guess what? The director said, ‘I like her, she is real.’ That’s how I landed my first role in Blind Spot.”Sandra added
Despite earning a law degree from the University of Benin and being called to the Nigerian Bar, Sandra took a bold leap. She relocated from Benin to Lagos, leaving behind family and a budding legal career to pursue acting. “My biggest sacrifice was leaving my comfort zone to get what I wanted. I left my family in Benin, paused my career in law, and moved to Lagos to squat with a friend because I wanted to pursue a career in the movie industry,” she shared.
Her journey began in earnest at the Royal Arts Academy, where she trained and met filmmaker Emem Isong. Sandra began attending auditions, facing the highs and lows that come with them. “From disturbing her every now and then with my monologues, going for auditions—the ones they will pick me and the ones they wouldn’t pick me—to the ones I will have to sit down and cry bitterly, ‘Why wasn’t I chosen?’… But so far, I’m thankful, I’m grateful,” she recalled.
