The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has joined the global community in mourning the death of Nigeria’s former President, Retired General Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
In an official condolence message, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the bereaved family, and the Nigerian people at large.
“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent,” the statement read.
Dr. Touray highlighted Buhari’s legacy as one marked by strong leadership, dedication to democratic principles, and a vision for a more united and prosperous West Africa.
The regional body praised the former Nigerian leader for his pivotal role in strengthening regional cooperation and maintaining political stability during his time in office and beyond.
“May his soul rest in paradise,” the message concluded.
The statement was issued from the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja and also translated into French and Portuguese in recognition of the organization’s multilingual membership across West Africa.
