Insecurity: Kwara South LGs order immediate shutdown of Kara markets

Local Government Chairmen across Kwara South Senatorial District have ordered the immediate closure of all Kara (cattle) markets within the zone, citing prevailing security challenges.

The directive, which takes effect from today, Friday,  was issued by the Forum of Seven Local Government Chairmen in Kwara South after what they described as “extensive stakeholder engagements and reviews.”

In a joint statement signed by the council chairmen of Ifelodun, Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf , Isin Hon. Benjamin Lanre Jolayemi, Irepodun, Hon. Azeez Yakub , Ekiti, Hon. Awelewa Olawale Gabriel , Oke-Ero, Hon. James Fadipe, Offa, Hon. Sulyman Olatunji, and Oyun LGAs, Hon. Akanbi Kamar Olarewaju, the leaders said the move was a proactive step aimed at safeguarding lives and property while ongoing military cleanup operations continue in the district.

“While the invading criminals have been operationally decimated in the last few weeks, cleanup operations by the military and hybrid operatives are still ongoing. Therefore, all Kara markets have been ordered to shut down with immediate effect until further notice,” the statement read in part.

The council bosses also directed that all other produce markets in the district should close by 6:00 p.m. on market days as part of the security measures.

Acknowledging the likely economic impact of the decision, the chairmen said the choice to suspend Kara market activities was painful but necessary.

“ We have chosen to prioritise the safety of lives and properties and adhere to long-term coordinated and structured security advisement over short-term inconveniences,” they stated.

They assured residents that the councils, in collaboration with the Kwara State Government and security agencies, were working to restore lasting peace to the region.

The chairmen appealed for cooperation from traders, residents, and commuters, stressing that the decision would be reviewed periodically and the markets reopened once a secure environment is guaranteed.
