By Lanre Idris Mustapha The Nigerian military has identified Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, as the ringleader of recent suicide bombings in the North-East. The breakthrough followed intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations in Kalmari, Maiduguri, on December 31, 2025, during which 14 suspects linked to suicide attacks were arrested. Investigations revealed Umar coordinated the recruitment, preparation, and deployment of suicide bombers. He also managed logistics and the delivery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Umar was linked to the December 24, 2025, suicide bombing at Gamboru Market Mosque and a foiled attack in Damaturu, Yobe State. The probe also uncovered the involvement of his wife, Yagana Modu, and corroboration from his stepdaughter, Amina. All suspects remain in custody as the military continues investigations to dismantle the network and recover remaining explosives. The Joint Task Force urged residents to provide timely information to support security operations, emphasizing that community cooperation is crucial in preventing attacks.
