Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N500 million bail to former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and two others, pending trial on money laundering charges filed by the federal government. The ruling on Wednesday applies to Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, Hajia Asabe Bashir. Under the bail terms, Malami and the others are required to provide two sureties each with landed properties in Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa. The Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court is tasked with verifying the property documents. The sureties must also submit affidavits of means. Malami has been ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court and must not leave the country without court permission. Additionally, he and his sureties are required to submit two recent passport photographs to the court. Until the bail conditions are fully met, Malami remains in Kuje Prison. At the time of the report, associates and supporters were reportedly working to secure his release. Justice Nwite set February 17 for the commencement of the trial. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a 16-count charge of money laundering against Malami, his son, and his wife. The court’s bail decision allows Malami and the others temporary freedom while the legal process continues, emphasizing compliance with strict verification and monitoring measures.
