OAU launches investigation Into medical student’s death

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has commenced investigations into the death of one of its medical students, Timilehin Adetoye Toromade.

The university confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that it is working with relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery, was reportedly found dead in his sleep.

In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution said the deceased was believed to have died around 2 a.m., based on accounts from his roommate.

According to the statement, one of Toromade’s roommates disclosed that the student was alive at about 2 a.m. after opening the door for another occupant of the room.

The statement identified the deceased as Timilehin Adetoye Toromade with matriculation number CLI/2022/133.

Describing the incident as tragic and distressing, the university said the loss had deeply affected the campus community.

The management noted that the deceased was a promising student who had embraced the demands of medical training with the aim of serving humanity.

The statement said the student’s death had created a sense of grief among his colleagues, lecturers, and others within the university community.

OAU management assured the public that investigations are ongoing and will follow established medical and administrative procedures.

The university added that appropriate support measures are being put in place to assist students and staff who may be emotionally affected by the incident.

The management appealed to students, staff, alumni, and the general public to remain calm and allow relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation.

It also urged members of the university community to show compassion and solidarity during the period of mourning.
