I did not anticipate winning Nobel Prize, I was surprised by the announcement – Soyinka

The Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has advised young and upcoming writers to focus on their craft rather than seeking awards and prizes.

Professor Wole Soyinka gave the advice while interacting with lecturers and students of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ilorin as part of activities marking the maiden edition of the Cultural Week celebration organized by the Centre for Cultural Studies and Creative Arts of the institution.

He emphasized the importance of creative freedom and passion, as he suggested that writers should find their area of inspiration and excel in it, and as well prioritize their art over external validation.

The Nobel Laureate shared his own experience, revealing that he did not anticipate winning the Nobel Prize and was surprised by the announcement which he earlier thought was a speculation.

Professor Wole Soyinka also emphasized the need for families and academic institutions to promote Nigerian culture and inculcate it, in the younger generation.
