The Imperative of Prioritising Citizen Welfare in Nigeria’s Political Discourse

As Nigeria navigates the complexities of its democratic journey, politicians must prioritise the welfare of citizens over partisan interests. The forthcoming elections, scheduled for 2027, have already begun to shape the political landscape, with both the ruling party and opposition engaging in intense politicking. However, this fervour has not translated into meaningful policy initiatives that address the myriad challenges confronting the nation.
The NPSA’s Concerns
The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) notes with concern that the preoccupation with electoral politics has diverted attention from critical development issues. Global statistics on poverty, unemployment, peace, debt overhang, and cost of living paint a grim picture of the nation’s progress. None of the political parties has articulated a progressive agenda that offers concrete solutions to these challenges.
The Need for a Paradigm Shift
While political associations are a hallmark of democratic systems, the timing of these activities is crucial. We urge politicians to take a break from campaigning and focus on serving the people. The question that begs an answer is: what solutions do they offer to improve the current situation, which is characterised by harsh living conditions for most Nigerians?
The Imperative of Economic Rejuvenation
The NPSA laments the perpetual decline in living standards and calls on politicians to work towards reversing this trend. The implications of this decline are far-reaching, as Nigeria’s foreign policy and global standing are already suffering as a result. If the current trend continues, the country will face even greater challenges post-2027. The most pressing issue, therefore, is how to change this narrative, rather than pursuing political power for its own sake, two years before the next round of elections.

In conclusion, the NPSA urges politicians to prioritise the welfare of citizens and work towards economic rejuvenation. Intra-class contentions should not be presented as a national agenda. Instead, the nation needs a paradigm shift that places the needs and aspirations of citizens at the forefront of political discourse. This is an urgent call to Nigeria’s political class.
