The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has praised the burial process of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, describing it as a significant step towards restoring the sanctity of Yoruba traditional institutions. According to Oba Akanbi, the burial rites, which were conducted according to Islamic traditions, marked a departure from the traditional practices that involved mutilation and cannibalization.
Oba Akanbi commended the courage demonstrated by the Awujale’s family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the Attorney General of Ogun State, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, for ensuring that the traditional ruler was buried with dignity. He noted that this development sets a path of honor for deceased Yoruba monarchs and frees them from physical and spiritual oppression after death .
The Awujale was buried according to Islamic rites, without mutilation or cannibalization, which Oba Akanbi described as a “win for the Yoruba race”.
Oba Akanbi believes that this development marks a significant step towards restoring the sanctity of Yoruba traditional institutions and freeing traditional rulers from physical and spiritual oppression after death.
Oluwo suggests that the burial process for Yoruba traditional rulers should be determined by the king before his death or his family after his passing, with optional involvement of secret groups.
Condemnation of Traditional Practices, Oba Akanbi criticized towns that still practice barbaric customs, stating that such towns should appoint herbalists, Osugbo, and Ogboni as their kings instead
