By: Mercy Folounsho A late-night fire outbreak at Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, destroyed several shops in the early hours of Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the Head of Media and Publicity, Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the blaze started around 1:35 a.m. and affected 22 plank shops and six container shops out of the 323 in the market. The statement said preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by negligence, while one of the shop occupants allegedly failed to properly extinguish a cooking fire, which later reignited and spread to adjoining shops. Firefighters were able to contain the inferno before it consumed more shops, preventing what could have been a much larger disaster. “The timely intervention of our officers prevented the fire from escalating and safeguarded hundreds of other shops and properties,” said the statement. The Agency therefore urged traders and residents to prioritize fire safety, stressing the need for caution in marketplaces where combustible materials are common.
