Says peaceful protest is a democratic right By Mercy Folounsho Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has condemned the assault on a group of women who staged a peaceful protest near the Government House in Ilorin during the Christmas holiday. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, Governor AbdulRazaq said peaceful protest is a democratic right. “The women were within their rights to express their grievances. We completely distance ourselves from the attack and urge the police to identify and prosecute everyone involved.” The Governor further stressed that his administration is not indifferent to security issues, noting recent measures taken to strengthen public safety across the state. He recalled that, only days earlier, he personally supervised the passing-out parade of newly armed forest guards, whose mandate includes clearing kidnappers and criminal gangs from forests across Kwara. According to him, this initiative complements ongoing deployment of security personnel and other strategic investments aimed at protecting residents and their property. A viral footage had shown suspected hoodlums rough-handling the protesters while the policemen attached to the government house were on looking — a development the Governor described as disturbing, unacceptable, and totally against the values of his administration. The Governor assured citizens that the culprits behind the attack will not go unpunished and reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting peace, law, and order.
