Teachers in Kwara State on Friday protested their exclusion from the newly approved 30 per cent Peculiar Salary Allowance granted to other state workers. The peaceful protest took place at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) state office in Ilorin. The teachers described the decision as unfair and discriminatory. Speaking for the protesters, Comrade Segun Afolabi said the Teachers’ Specific Allowance (TSA) is a legal entitlement. He stressed that it should not replace the newly approved 30 per cent allowance. Afolabi said teachers in Kwara earn far below the country’s economic reality. He added that teachers were excluded from the November 2024 palliatives paid to other civil servants. Reacting, NUT Chairman in Kwara State, Comrade Yusuf Agboola, appealed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to include teachers in the allowance. He urged teachers to remain calm and avoid further protests. Agboola said the union demanded during negotiations that teachers should benefit from both allowances. He confirmed that the 27.5 per cent TSA was recently approved after over ten years. He called for unity among teachers, saying dialogue remains the best path to resolve the issue.
