By: Mercy Folounsho The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently ensure justice in the alleged killing of 27-year-old Master Noel Chinedu Okechukwu, only son of former Council Secretary of the union. In a communiqué signed by the Chairman Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and the Secretary Dr. Okechukwu Onuegbu, the Council reviewed a petition from the bereaved family over the incident. The deceased, a Theatre Arts student at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, was allegedly shot dead on August 17, 2024, by private security guards at Senator Stella Oduah’s estate in Akiri-Ozizor, Ogbaru Local Government Area, while attempting to buy fresh fish from a nearby pond. The family has petitioned the Anambra State Police Command, Zone 13 Ukpo, the Inspector-General of Police, and the state government, but says no meaningful action has followed two years after. The NUJ in the communique condemned the continued denial of family access to the corpse and urged police to immediately disclose the body’s location, allow an autopsy at family expense and re=assign the case file from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for full investigation, including autopsy and prompt arraignment of suspects. The Council also demanded the arrest of the prime suspect and others involved to prevent investigation lapses, and requested updates on the trial for public information through credible reporting. The NUJ expressed hope that swift action by authorities would deliver justice, delayed till now, and allow the family to lay their son to rest.
