The senate of the national assembly has in Tuesday, passed the second reading of a bit seeking to convert Yaba college of technology, Lagos into degree awarding institution.
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Lagos State,” was debated extensively during plenary and received widespread support from senators.
Leading the debate, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that the conversion of the renowned polytechnic had already been approved by the Presidency. The purpose of the bill, he said, was to provide full legislative backing to actualize the upgrade.
According to Bamidele, the new institution would be a cornerstone for Nigeria’s advancement in technical and vocational education, aligning with the nation’s broader developmental objectives.
“This bill represents a bold step in Nigeria’s push for accessible, modern education tailored to the demands of a 21st-century economy. It will provide facilities for learning, encourage research with a focus on technical fields, and be open to all Nigerians, regardless of background,” he stated.
With the second reading concluded, the bill has now been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further legislative scrutiny. The committee is expected to report back within four weeks.
If passed into law, the establishment of the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies is expected to not only elevate the academic offerings of YABATECH but also strengthen the country’s workforce through improved access to specialized education.
